Earring styles explained

Indian earrings have names for every shape. Here are the styles you will find at Ikaa and when to wear each.

The styles

What is a jhumka?
A bell or dome shaped earring that hangs from a stud, often with beads or tiny bells along the edge. It moves as you move, which is why it is the favourite for dancing and festivals. Small jhumkas work every day too. Shop jhumkas

What is a chandbali?
A crescent moon shaped earring, from "chand" (moon) and "bali" (earring). Usually wider than it is long and often decorated with stones, beads or hanging drops. A chandbali frames the face and is a statement piece for weddings and festivals. Shop chandbalis

What are studs and tops?
Small earrings that sit on the earlobe without hanging. Tops is the everyday Indian word for them. The easiest earrings to wear all day, to work or with western clothes. Shop studs and tops

What are drops and danglers?
Earrings that hang below the earlobe from a stud or hook, from a single drop to several tiers. They add movement without the size of a jhumka or chandbali. Shop drops and danglers

What are long earrings?
Earrings that fall towards the shoulder, often with chains, tiers or tassels. Best with hair tied up and a simple neckline. Shop long earrings

Choosing

Which style suits a round face?
Long earrings and drops add length. Wide chandbalis add width, so pick a narrower pair.

Which style is easiest for a first purchase?
Small jhumkas or studs: they go with almost everything, from a kurta to jeans.

How do I know the size before I buy?
Every product page lists the length where the piece has been measured. For anything else, ask us on WhatsApp before you order.
